Sedative

It is a central nervous system (CNS) depressant substance that causes calm, relaxation, drowsiness, reduced respiration, in some cases euphoria, challenging reflexes, and reduced anxiety. They are usually known as antidepressants, anxiolytics, soporific, sleeping pills, or tranquilizers, although the latter have much smaller effects.

Doctors sedate patients to reduce anxiety when they cannot manage their emotions related to pain or certain procedures.

Sedatives are therapeutic aids, they are administered together with analgesics or before anesthesia, before invasive, uncomfortable, and painful procedures.

They can cause physical and psychological dependence if used for extended periods of time. If treatment is stopped abruptly, biological withdrawal symptoms such as cold sweat, anxiety, and seizures appear. On a psychological level, a patient may feel the need to consume the drug.

They may be:

• Antidepressants
• Antihistamines.
• Antipsychotic
• Herbal sedatives.
• Barbiturates.

Tranquilizers

As sedatives, they are depressants of the Central Nervous System, at low doses, they reduce nervous excitability and at high doses they induce sleep. They produce feelings of calm and are more effective than barbiturates in relieving anxiety and stress and are less toxic and with fewer side effects.

Benzodiazepines are usually classified as tranquilizers.

Its consumption is generalized and they are prescribed to treat anxiety, muscle spasms, and insomnia.

Differences between Sedative and Tranquilizer

• There are not too many differences between the two drugs. Many times, a sedative is considered a tranquilizer. Both act as central nervous system depressants.
• Some sources consider benzodiazepines tranquilizers and other CNS depressants as sedatives.
