Differences between Neoclassicism and Romanticism

Neoclassicism

It occurs after the French Revolution, at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. It was inspired by the Greek heroes and the simplicity of Roman art. His great appreciation of the past was one of his main hallmarks.

Among its main characteristics are:

  • They valued the aesthetic themes and patterns of ancient classical art.
  • It was influenced by Greco-Roman art.
  • It was based on philosophical ideals linked to a reason.
  • It valued the simplicity, purity, and balance of the forms and its themes were mythological, every day, and imitated nature.

In painting, they used cold colors and emphasized perspective. In literature, the texts were clear, with great grammatical perfection and generally very synthesized.

For sculpture, the artists opted for the natural color of marble rather than painting it.

Neoclassical architecture was based on classical ideals, erecting temples, and civil buildings in the Greco-Roman style.

Romanticism

It is a cultural movement that had its origin in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Spain when the ideas of neoclassicism began to decline. It was a revolutionary response against rationalism and sought to give priority to feelings. It is considered as the first cultural movement that reached all of Europe.

He sought to break with the classicist tradition based on stereotypical rules. They constantly searched for freedom, they sought to feel and conceive nature and the human being.

They raised awareness of the human being as an autonomous entity, valued what was different from the ordinary, and raised liberalism against despotism. They were characterized by showing originality, inviting each person to show what made them unique, they extolled creativity and not imitation.

Differences between Neoclassicism and Romanticism

  • Neoclassicism spanned the 18th to the early 16th century in response to the Renaissance, drawing inspiration from the culture and art of ancient Greece and Rome.
  • Neoclassicism gave greater importance to thought and reason, in literature it gave importance to grammar and the language used.
  • In sculpture and painting, neoclassicism sought simple lines and clear, rational themes.
  • Romanticism emerged almost at the end of the 18th century, it was a response to the Enlightenment and neoclassicism. When being invaded by the machines of the Industrial Revolution, the artists revealed themselves showing a greater link with nature, medieval times, and myths.
  • Romanticism sought to express emotions, describe nature, and show adventures and discoveries. It was a liberal movement that gave importance to creativity and not to imposed artistic canons.
