Difference Between Kinetic Energy And Potential Energy

                            KINETIC ENERGY               POTENTIAL ENERGY

Definition

The energy due to the motion of a body is called Kinetic energy. Is the energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position or configuration?

Mathematical Measurement

Kinetic energy possessed by a body of mass m moving with velocity y can be calculated

By    K.E. =

Potential energy possessed by a body of

mass m at height h can be calculated by

P.E. =  mgh

KINETIC ENERGY

Definition

When a body is capable of doing work by virtue of its motion, the energy is called kinetic energy.

                                                                            OR

The energy is associated with a mass due to its motion is called kinetic energy.

ELASTIC POTENTIAL ENERGY

Definition

The energy stored in a stretched or compressed elastic material such as a spring is called elastic’ potential energy.

EXPLANATION

1f a spring is wound, work is done in winding it against the elastic force of spring. This work is stored IN

the spring as potential energy- This type of potential energy is due to the constrained position of the spring

EXAMPLE

In figure, a force ‘F’ pushes a spring to compress it from its equilibrium position ‘O’ to some other

position x. This force is directly proportional to the amount of compression.

i.e.          F

or       F = Kx

Where ‘K’ is force constant (spring constant) its value depends on how stilt the spring ¡s Since the

the compression force is zero at O’ and l(x at x, the average force needed to compress the spring from

Position O to x is

Therefore work done In Compressing the spring is W = X

Or    W =  K

This work causes the elastic potential energy. there tore

Elastic potential energy  =
