Intrinsic motivation

According to one of the best-known theories about intrinsic motivation “Self-determination” Enunciated in 1975 by psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan, people have three needs:

• The need to feel competent.
• The need to relate.
• The need for autonomy.

In this way, intrinsic motivation arises from the combination of these three needs. It is what leads us to take actions and establish our own behaviors by will, desire, and inspiration of our own without desiring an external reward.

This motivation can lead you to study better to feel fulfilled, work because that way you will be autonomous or participate in sports to make friends and improve yourself.

This motivation is voluntary, due to interest, pleasure, internal rewards, pride, abilities, beliefs, nd internal needs. A person with intrinsic motivation is more cooperative and less competitive, keeps the interest in the activity or work for much longer.

Extrinsic Motivation

It is the one that leads us to do something for external rewards, whether physical, monetary, or psychological reinforcement. That is, it is the one that motivates us when the reward is not a natural consequence of the task performed.

Extrinsic motivation can be praise. In the case of children, many of their early behaviors are due to this type of motivation, the praise of their parents helps them regulate their behavior, build their identity and build their own intrinsic motivation.

Extrinsic motivation over time becomes intrinsic motivation, we learn to perform actions and have behaviors without expecting anything in return, just for the pleasure of doing them or feeling fulfilled.

In short, extrinsic motivation is one that motivates us to obtain something desired or avoid adverse results that are not a natural consequence of our actions.

Difference between Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation

• Intrinsic motivation seeks intangible, personal rewards.
• Extrinsic motivation is one that leads us to seek tangible rewards.
• Extrinsic motivation induces interest and participation in something in which the individual had no interest.
• Intrinsic motivation comes from the individual.
• Intrinsic motivation keeps people interested in something for longer.
• Extrinsic motivation comes from the outside, it can be rewards or punishments that promote or avoid certain attitudes and actions.
• Extrinsic motivation only keeps you interested in something for a short time. Even if rewards are offered for something in which the individual is intrinsically motivated, it can lead to losing interest in the activity that generated satisfaction.
