Difference between ammeter and voltmeter

Ammeter

Voltmeter

Definition

It is a galvanometer having law resistance in parallel. It is used to measure current. It is a galvanometer having high resistance in series. It is used to measure potential difference.

Resistance

A low value resistance called SHUNT is connected in parallel with the ceil of galvanometer. A high value resistance is connected in series with the coil of galvanometer.

Type of connection

Ammeter is always connected in series with circuit. Voltmeter is always connected in parallel with circuit.

Option

To measure large current, a low resistance connected in parallel with galvanometer. To measure high P.D.  a high resistance is connected in series with galvanometer.
